A thought-provoking art campaign that aims to put climate change into the forefront of our minds, anchored by our personal experiences.
Providing both serious and sometimes playful messaging, Dear Climate is an innovative art initiative encouraging the global discussion of climate change. While not altogether ominous, Dear Climate does offer some thought-provoking, and at times, somber imagery and sounds regarding the health of our planet, our relationship with the environment, and the topic of overall climate change.
The creators of Dear Climate “began Dear Climate by looking for a new way to talk about the weather…interested in finding a more personal relationship to climate change.” Since then Marina Zurkow, Una Chaudhuri, Oliver Kellhammer, Fritz Ertl and Sarah Rothberg, along with Pejk Malinovski, Eliza Foss and Seth Kanor, have created images and sound collages that do just that, such as in the poster below.
Before entering the Dear Climate website, a pop-up box appears explaining what Dear Climate is all about saying, “Dear Climate is a collection of agitprop poster and meditative audio experiences that help you meet, befriend, and become climate change.” Upon landing on the home page of the website, you encounter a letter written by creators Marina, Una, Oliver, and Fritz, which in part further explains what the artwork is all about; the letter suggests that by attempting to shift humanities relationship with our environment, perhaps we can begin to find solutions for climate change.
