Do you know where Canada stands on greenhouse gas emissions?

Learn more about GHG emissions, electricity and Legend Power’s green ideas…

light-bulb-297489_640Greenhouse gases are one of the known contributing factors to climate change. According to the Conference Board of Canada, Canada ranks 15th out of 17 OECD countries on GHG emissions per capita and the largest contributor to our country’s emissions is the energy sector. This includes power generation (heat and electricity), transportation and fugitive sources.

Since burning fossil fuels is one of the top culprits of high GHG emissions, energy is a key policy category for tracking and analyzing climate change related to GHG emissions. The biggest challenge that we and all countries face is to make economic growth less dependant on energy use and establish more efficient, cleaner fuels and low-emitting electricity sources.

In 2010, Canada’s GHG emissions was 20.3 tonnes per capita and although the number has dropped since 1990, it is still higher than the 17-tonne average among the OECD countries. The energy sector was responsible for 81 percent of the country’s emissions, most coming from combustion sources; electricity, heat generation and fossil fuels. We may currently have a “D” grade when it comes to our contribution to the world’s greenhouse gases, but we can help change that.

With every change made to commercial buildings and electrical energy consumption, we get one step closer to reducing the amount of the greenhouse gas emissions. So how exactly can we help? By creating a more efficient flow of electricity to commercial buildings, GHG emissions will be reduced. One building may make a small difference, but imagine if many commercial structures and facilities were all intent on employing efficient methods to energy consumption?
