Tesla for the masses? Can that be possible? Yes!
You’re probably thinking Tesla is a luxury vehicle for only those swimming in a large pool of wealth that does not seem apply to the majority of the populace. After all, you don’t see Tesla’s on the road the way you see Toyota’s.
Now in cities worldwide, loud gas guzzling buses are starting to disappear as they are replaced with new, battery-powered, travelling computers. This new wave of super buses are powered by the same technology you would find in a Tesla sedan. This is Tesla for the masses, at the price of a bus fare, and this is the mission and vision of Proterra.
These new electric buses will be a clean and quiet mode of transportation that can do double duty: get you where you need to be and keep the air clean! Although they may have a larger cost up front, these are well worth the investment in the long run since they do not burn fossil fuels and have zero emissions.
According to Ryan Popple, the CEO of Proterra and former senior finance director of Elon Musk’s upscale electric-car maker Tesla,“Our vehicles are more like 25,000-pound computers… Our biggest vehicle is about four Teslas’ worth of batteries, but we can move ten times as many people.”
A typical Eco-ride bus has eight battery packs, lots of circuit boards and other electronics. It also has a tiny motor and few, if any, fluids.
