Pollution and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, if not the sole causes, have certainly contributed to global warming. In a recent report from the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), the results were very clear: we need to do more as society to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions in order to minimize the global warming rate to less than two degrees and limit the impacts.
According to the report, if we continue “business as usual” we are on track to exceed our carbon budgets and contribute to increased average global temperatures. Science-based carbon targets are the necessary amounts of greenhouse gas emission reductions, calculated by scientific formulas and have been determined by climate scientists as the ideal goals that can help keep the global temperature rise below two degrees Celsius.
It’s not all doom and gloom though. Our window to act is now and the IPCC has laid the groundwork for governments and the private sector to take more ambitious steps in GHG emissions reduction efforts.
