In honour of the Earth Hour movement, let’s take a look at a few Earth Hour stats…
Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australia and was a campaign created by WWF-Australia. The first Earth Hour event took place on March 31st, 2007 with more than 2.2 million individuals and 2000 businesses turned out the lights for one hour. This year marks the ninth year of the campaign, which has grown into a worldwide movement.
Every year, Earth Hour takes place in March, with the date varying slightly. From Sydney it has expanded to cities worldwide and has created an interconnected global community of souls sharing the same goal: to raise awareness and inspire environmental change. Since its inception, more than 7000 cities and towns in over 150 countries have participated in Earth Hour, turning off all non-essential lights and electronics, living by candle light, for one hour. Over 3000 landmarks have also turned off their illumination for one hour, including the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben, Burj Khalifa, St. Peter’s Basilica, Times Square, and Christ the Redeemer statue, to name a few.
