In 2006, only 18 percent of the world’s energy for electricity was renewable. Most of that power came from hydroelectric dams that harnessed the power of water. However, dams do have their own environmental impact on freshwater ecosystems. Luckily there are more options that exist and are developing everyday that can provide the world with renewable energy resources.
