Power quality matters more than you think
Two different standards, and the gap between them.
Power standards from utilities
Electrical utilities deliver voltage within a broad acceptable utility range to account for distribution losses. While these ranges meet regulatory standards — ANSI and IEEE — they do not necessarily align with how your building’s systems are designed to perform.
Power standards from equipment manufacturers
Most building systems operate best at a specific voltage, ±5 volts — the Name Plate Voltage Rating (NPR), established by the equipment manufacturer through rigorous testing under controlled, optimal power conditions. It is the voltage at which equipment is proven to perform safely, efficiently, and reliably.
Even small deviations from that target can reduce system performance, efficiency, and lifespan.

Risk zones
How far off is too far?
Operating outside the optimal range — even when the voltage is technically “acceptable” — increases the risk of equipment malfunctions, unplanned downtime, and premature failure of sensitive electronics.
Optimal
Within ±5 volts of the Name Plate Rating.
Moderate risk
+10 to +24 volts, or −10 to −14 volts, off nameplate.
Severe risk
+25 volts or −15 volts off nameplate, and beyond.
Why it matters
Prolonged exposure to incorrect voltage — especially outside optimal ranges — accelerates wear and increases inefficiencies. This is a hidden risk most building owners are not aware of until it is too late.
