The Future of the Power Grid

Discover exciting new ways to think about the power grid and how they may affect the way that the world generates and consumes energy.

On Monday we shared an infographic that explained the life cycle of the power grid. Details concerning how electricity is currently generated, transmitted, distributed and consumed were all covered, as well the evolution of the grid that is taking place due to innovative technologies. It is with these grid innovations and the future of the power grid that our focus lies today.

With many technologies evolving out of our need to conserve our global energy consumption and protect our planet’s resources, it would appear as though change is on the horizon. However, it would seem that it’s not about creating a more powerful or complex version of the current power grid; it’s about thinking differently about the grid itself.

Below is a thought-provoking video from Think Further. The video is one in a series of shorts called Conversations with Tomorrow. In the video, Donald Sadoway, a professor at MIT, describes what he believes will be the next generation grid, a power grid that makes the consumers of electricity also the generators. The clip is fairly short but it’s still enough to get you thinking.
